I’m reaching out regarding a reverse engineering and redesign project involving a commercial robotic hand.
Project Overview:
I will be providing you with some disassembled physical parts from an existing robotic hand. The objective is to reverse engineer these parts and redesign them from the ground up — while preserving the original form factor — optimizing the design for manufacturability, cost, and ease of assembly.
Key Requirements:
1. Reverse Engineering
Physical components from the robotic hand will be supplied to your team. I need these fully measured, documented, and translated into CAD files (preferably STEP/IGES or a parametric format such as SolidWorks or Fusion 360).
2. Design Optimization (from the ground up)
Using the reverse engineered data as a reference, the parts should be redesigned with the following priorities:
3D printing optimization: geometry suited for FDM or SLA printing, minimizing supports, and designed with good print orientation in mind
Ease of assembly: simplified part count, intuitive assembly sequence, and where possible, snap-fit or fastener-friendly interfaces
Structural integrity: ensuring the redesigned parts maintain the strength and function of the originals
3. Same Form Factor
The redesigned hand must retain the same overall form factor and dimensions as the original, so it remains compatible with its intended application.
4. Off-the-Shelf Actuator, sensors & Components
Rather than proprietary or custom actuators and sensors, the design should be adapted to accommodate affordable, readily available off-the-shelf actuators, gears, and hardware — reducing cost and improving long-term serviceability.
The end goal is a fully optimized, functional prototype that mirrors the original in form and function, but is significantly more cost-effective and easier to produce.
